The Mineral Management Program

The Mineral Management Program is an educational self-study course offered exclusively through the NARO Foundation and designed to increase your knowledge of mineral management. The program has two levels of certification: Registered Mineral Manager (RMM) and Certified Mineral Manager (CMM).

Registered Mineral Manager (RMM): Designed for individuals who wish to increase their basic understanding of mineral ownership and mineral management concepts. RMMs may use the RMM designation after their name in signatures, business cards, and similar uses.

Certified Mineral Manager (CMM): Designed for individuals currently involved, or planning to be involved, in managing, administering, or developing oil and gas properties. The CMM level is more advanced and may be helpful for trust officers, landmen, attorneys, and experienced mineral managers. CMMs may use the CMM designation after their name.

There are two main requirements: education and examination. Candidates must obtain a passing grade on the required exam or exams and accumulate the required number of Education Credits, including one Ethics Education Credit.

• RMM: Candidates must pass Exam 1 and complete a minimum of 50 Education Credit hours, including 1 hour of Ethics Education Credit, prior to taking Exam 1.
• CMM: Candidates must pass Exam 1 and Exam 2 and complete a minimum of 100 Education Credit hours, including 1 hour of Ethics Education Credit, prior to taking Exam 2.

You may accumulate Education Credits by attending NARO-sponsored events such as town halls, webinars, conventions, Mineral Management Review Classes, and seminars. Many oil and gas related educational classes and events may also count toward some program credits.

Past oil and gas professional experience and current industry-related certifications may also be considered. Credits may be submitted retroactively up to five years prior to registration, subject to limitations. Review the Mineral Management Program Policies and Procedures for details.

Ethics credits may be earned by attending NARO or non-NARO events where ethics is specifically listed in the program schedule.

Some professions, including CPAs, attorneys, and financial advisors, require ethics training. Submitting an Affidavit of Attendance with documentation of recent ethics-related coursework, training, or seminars may be used for review. If you are unsure whether an upcoming event qualifies, submit the event program to registrar@naro-us.org for review and approval.

Exam opportunities are offered throughout the year at NARO State Conventions and the annual NARO National Convention. Exam 2 is only offered at the NARO National Convention.

All candidates must complete program registration, pay the registration fee, and obtain the required education credit hours before sitting for exams. Candidates must submit proof of prerequisite education credits before examination. Preregistration and prepayment for exams is required. Contact registrar@naro-us.org to confirm education credits and register for exams.

Only one exam may be taken at any testing opportunity. Exam 1 and Exam 2 each allow 90 minutes. The NARO National Convention offers two exam opportunities.

Study resources, including the Review Course Manual, are available on the program registration form or by contacting the National Office at 918-749-1660.

The Review Course is a 4-hour educational course and often includes an Ethics session. The fee to attend is $100 and does not include the cost of the review manual. The Review Course is offered multiple times during the year.

The course is elective, although most participants choose to attend before testing. Preregistration is required by contacting registrar@naro-us.org or calling the National Office at 918-749-1660.

Important: These courses are also available to people not currently enrolled in the program. However, attendees must still preregister and pay the associated fees. Attending the Review Course does not enroll you in the program, register you for an exam, or include registration in any NARO Convention.

Recertification is required every five years. To recertify, submit the Recertification Form, pay the applicable fee, meet the Education Credit requirement, and meet the Ethics Credit requirement.

• RMM: 30 Education Credits, including 1 Ethics Credit. Twenty of the credits must be from NARO-sponsored events.
• CMM: 60 Education Credits, including 1 Ethics Credit. Forty of the credits must be from NARO-sponsored events.
• Emeritus: No Education Credits are required.

The recertification fee is $100 for both RMMs and CMMs.
